Should I hire a real estate agent?
Should I hire a real estate agent? If you're thinking of purchasing a home, my answer is a definite yes. Even if you're not too familiar with the ins and outs of real estate, an agent or broker can help guide you through the process, explain laws, find listings that are only in the local multiple listing service (MLS) and most importantly, give you professional advice. Even if you are rather knowledgeable about real estate, hiring a professional is a smart move. After all, a home is an important purchase both financially and emotionally. Having someone who is detached from the emotional and focused on the financial is a very good thing (and it might even save you money).
If you are thinking about selling a home, my opinion is a little different. I would recommend hiring a Realtor to assist you with the sale, since selling a home can be complicated. To many people, the work they do is well worth the commission they charge, which is normally around 6% (although it can be lower). If you feel comfortable handling the paper work and all the details, you might want to consider a "For Sale By Owner" listing, or an "entry only" listing where an agent enters your home in the local MLS and provides you with the necessary documents. Both methods could save money, but of course, there's also a lot of work involved. If it were me, I'd probably opt for a Realtor.
WIth that said, I have one important piece of advice: Interview lots of Realtors. Make appointments, meet with them, and see if they are someone you want working for you. Buying or selling a home is a huge transaction, and you need to make sure you're comfortable with the person you have working for you. If you are, the whole process will be much easier.
